Donostiatik Madrilera eta segidan Quitora. Quitora iritsita, alforjak ta bizikleta autobusean sartu, autobuseko langileari zentrura joateko argibideak galdetu eta kontrako zentzura bidali ninduten. Nola ezpa, maparik ez zen inguruan.
Autobusak Quitoko kanpokaldean dagoen auzo batean utzi ninduen. Zentru aldera joateko beste modu bat topatu behar nuen eta 75 bat urte inguruko aiton baten furgoneta zahar batean joan ginen Granados con Hiedras-era. Hori zen Warmshowers-eko Diegok eman zizkidan argibideak.

Aldaparik ez zen tarte batean, abiadurari begiratu eta 20 km/h ikusi nuen, furgoneta ezinean zebilen, kontuak atera aldapa gora nola zebilen. Momentu batean jeitsi ta bultzatu egin beharko nuela pentsatu nuen. Nola edo ala, iritsi ginen Av.Granados eta Las Hidedras-eko ixkinera. Bertako denda batean Vilmita izeneko emakumen bat aurkitu behar nuen, Diegok etxeko giltzak bertan utzi bait zizkidan. Inguruan berriz ez zen inongo dendarik eta are gutxiago Vilmitarik.

Alejo ta bere bolidoa / Alejo and his rocket

Berandu zen eta Alejok, furgonetako gidariak, goizeko 3-etan jeiki behar zuen lanean hasteko. Hortxe ixkinean uzteko esan nion eta lasai joateko etxera, baina berak ez ninduen kale horietan gauez trasto guztiekin bakarrik utzi nahi, gauak harriskua dakarki eta kale horietan gehiago. Ahal bezain laster bera etxera joan zedin, leku seguru bat aurkitu behar nuen eta segituan bizikleta denda bat ikusi nuen. Gogo handiz ireki zizkidaten ateak eta bizikletan plastikoa kendu eta bizikleta muntatzen lagundu zideaten. Bertako interneta erabiltzen utzi eta horrela Diegori deitu nion, non nengoen azalduz. Bertako langileak bitartean flipatzen ari ziren. Ero hura nondik atera ote zen galdezka arituko ziren.
Bost minutu beranduago Diego iritsi zen dendara. Ufff, gauza bat gutxio, iritsi gea!

From San Sebastián to Quito via Madrid. After arriving in Quito´s airport, grap the saddlebags and the packed up bike and I got in the bus towards Quito´s City center, presumably. There were no maps in the nearby, therefore I asked a bus employer how to get to the city center.

Five minutes later… God dammit, they sent me in the wrong direction.
I need a fallback! The bus stopped in the suburbs and I found an old van driver in his 75 ready to bring me to “Granados Avenue and Las Hiedras”. That was the indication I got from Diego, the Warmshowers host who invited me to stay in his apartment.
Warmshowers is a touring cyclist community whose aim is to offer accommodation and a warm shower for free.

Quito is surrounded by mountains and wherever you want to go, it is unavoidable to climb up and down constantly. We were driving in a flat area when I stared at the speedometer, 20 km/h that was the speed. Awesome! Could you imagine how fast it could drive climbing up a mountain? Just for a second I thought I had to get off from the van and push it. Whatever the case may be, we achieved the goal. We were in the corner of Granados Avenue and Las Hiedras. Now it´s time to find Vilmita, the woman who works in a shop and has the key of Diego´s apartment. Unfortunately there was no shop and even less Vilmita.

It was late and Alejo, the old van driver, had to get up at 3 o´clock in the morning to start working. I asked him to drop me at the corner but he did not want to leave me alone with all that baggage. Those streets are dangerous during the night. In order to send him home asap, I had to find a safe place to leave my luggage while I could contact Diego. A short while later, I found a bike store and they helped me with the luggage, mounting the bike and contacting Diego. All the bike store´s staff was looking at me as if I were E.T.

Five minutes later Diego arrived. Yess!! Done.

Quito ezagutzen

Goizeko 4-etako saltoka nenbilen, hemen 7 ordu gutxiago dira, neretzat aldiz goizeko 11-ak. 7-ak aldera Diego jeiki da eta gosari on bat egin degu. Kontu kontari izan eta gero Diegok erropak garbitu behar zituen, eskuz, garai batean erreka bazterrean edota baserrian egiten zen bezela. Dutxatzeko kaldera pizteko, bi pisu beherago dagoen trastero moduko batera joan behar da, han kandatua ireki, bizikletak pasa eta erropak garbitzeko harriaren ondoan, hantxe dago kaldera.

Bera abokatua da, zuzenbide zibilean aditua eta teknologia munduko gaietan ere aritzen da. Segurataz josita dagoen auzo batean bizi da. Ez, ez pentsa hau Beverly Hills denik.
Etxea ikusi ezkero, Antonio Alcantaran 70. hamarkadako etxeak, gaur egungo etxe domotiko modernoena dirudi. Jesus gurutzean, biblia, sukaldean hornillo elektriko xixtrin bat eta kazuela batean te zapore arin bat duen irakindako ura.

Gutxiena dutenek, eskuzabalenak direla esaten da ba. Ez dakit hori beti horrela den, baina kasu honetan, dudik gabe! Duen bizi-pozak eta elkartasunak ez du preziorik. Erropak garbitu ondoren, bizikletak hartu eta Quito ezagutzera joan gara. Beno, ezagutzera nik, berak gida turistiko lanak egin ditu. Txoko guztien istoriak kontatuz eta kontu kontari pasa dugu eguna. “Un juguito” eta “un almuerso” ere egin genuen Quitoko independentzia plazaren ondoan zegoen auzoko jatetxe batean, 2,75 dollar. Earki geatu ginen!

Discovering Quito

Due to the jet lag I woke up at 4 o´clock, it was 11 for my biological clock. At 7 Diego got up and we had a good breakfast. After chatting for a while, Diego had to wash his clothes, with his own hands, as our grandparents used to do in the farmhouse.

He is a lawyer, specialised in civil law and new techlogies. He lives in a fenced neighborhood full of security guys. No, don´t get me wrong, this is not Beverly Hills, it´s a humble apartment with a gas water boiler two floors below. It is said that the ones who have the less, are the most generous. I don´t know if this is always like that, but I can assure that this guy is incredibly generous and his positive thoughts and solidarity are priceless.
After having washed the clothes, we took the bikes to discover Quito. He, as a tour guide showed me all the parks, streets and squares of Quito, everything by bike. We drank a “Juguito” and had “el almuerso” (lunch), close to the independence square (he knows I´m Basque) of Quito. All that for 2.75$

Quiton beste egun bat

Bidaia jarraitzeko falta den materiala erosi, sumendien berri jakiteko, mendiko gida batzuekin hitz egin eta Diegoren familiarekin afaria, hau da gaurko plana. Gaur ni izango naiz sukaldaria eta zortzi lagun bilduko gera. Sukaldeak berriz, ez ditu Mugaritzeko sukaldeak dituen baliabideak eskaintzen. Dagoen zartagi bakarrean arraultz bat juxtu-juxtu sartzen da. Delako Vilmita hori bilatu beharko det pulamentuzko zartagi bat lortzeko.

Another day in Quito

To continue the trip I need to buy the missing material, get indications from mountain guides to climb the volcanos and have dinner with Diego´s family. Today I´ll be the cook and I need to prepare something for 8 dinner guests. The kitchen, however, it is not specially huge and the only frying pan has place only for one egg. I might find the so called Vilmita in order to get a proper frying pan.
